東海道沿路建有53個宿場。每個宿場皆備有驛馬、信差以便替換，有官吏、旅客的宿泊場所，同時亦建有茶屋、商店。因絡繹不絕的人潮，江戶時代這53個宿場，曾出現一片繁華的境況。後因公路、鐵路的發展，宿場逐漸沒落，現多成為旅遊觀光地。
這是個行棋收集卡牌的遊戲。玩家是一名由京都出發，目的地是江戶的旅者。玩家沿東海道，體驗各種不同經歷。玩家將目睹瑰麗景色、品嘗地道美食、購買地方特產、浸泡舒適溫泉、並邂逅各式人物。
